Airbnb to launch AI travel agent in first half of 2027 as Q3 revenue rises 19% to $4.87 billion

Airbnb will launch its custom AI travel agent in the first half of 2027, the company disclosed in its third-quarter shareholder letter on Thursday, alongside reporting quarterly revenue of $4.87 billion that topped Wall Street estimates.

The timeline narrows earlier guidance from the travel platform, which had previously indicated an AI product launch sometime within the next year. Alongside the launch window, Airbnb detailed how the agent will function, arguing that traditional text-heavy chat windows are poorly suited for travel planning.

Why it matters

For consumer platforms and product teams building generative AI features, Airbnb is taking a clear stand against off-the-shelf chatbot interfaces. Instead of relying on conversational text blocks or third-party agents, the company is creating a custom user interface that dynamically assembles visual components like maps, comparison tools, and calendars in real time.

By retaining control over the booking flow and post-booking support, Airbnb is attempting to prevent general-purpose AI agents from stepping between it and its customers. The move also signals how major marketplaces intend to use decades of proprietary booking data to defend their core transaction channels.

Custom generative UI over traditional chat

Chief Executive Officer Brian Chesky told analysts on the earnings call that consumer behaviour during travel planning requires a visual, interactive approach rather than text conversations. He noted that existing agents such as Muse and Instinct excel at routine tasks like booking a table or scheduling an appointment, but fall short when applied to trip planning.

Chesky cited company data showing that 80% of travellers enjoy spending time researching trips. People want to view property photos, compare listings side by side, and collaborate with travel companions before making a decision. Consequently, general-purpose chatbots are not the ideal tool for the process, he said.

To address this, Airbnb is building what Chesky described as a generative user interface. Rather than returning standard text responses, the agent will draw from a library containing hundreds of travel-specific components — including photos, maps, calendars, and itineraries — and arrange them on screen to match what the user is seeking at that moment.

Support across the full trip lifecycle

Airbnb said its agent will rely on nearly 20 years of host and guest interaction data. This background will allow the system to handle tasks that external AI tools cannot directly execute on the platform.

Beyond initial discovery and booking, the agent is designed to assist guests throughout their stays. Features will include modifying existing reservations, resolving payment disputes, processing refunds, managing rebookings, and providing access to 24-hour safety support.

Over time, Airbnb expects to extend the agent's capabilities to cover additional offerings, including stay options across homes and hotels, as well as services and experiences. Services and experiences have taken on an expanded role within the platform following a major product redesign last year.

Financial results and raised guidance

The product roadmap accompanied strong financial results for the third quarter of 2026. Airbnb reported revenue of $4.87 billion, representing a 19% increase year-on-year and setting the company's fastest quarterly revenue growth rate in more than three years.

On the back of the performance, Airbnb raised its full-year 2026 revenue growth forecast to the high teens, up from its previous outlook of mid-teens growth. Chesky told analysts that the marketplace has returned to growth mode, noting that reaccelerating revenue growth at Airbnb's scale remains rare.

In its letter to shareholders, the company declared that artificial intelligence represents the best developments in its operational history, fundamentally altering how it builds software and runs daily operations.
