Beyond the Metros: How Flutrr Is Redefining Dating for Bharat

India is the fifth-largest market for dating apps in the world. Over the past decade, modern dating culture has spread widely across the country, reaching even young people in small towns. Yet one persistent barrier remains: most popular dating apps rely heavily on English. For many users in Tier II and Tier III cities, this language gap makes it harder to express feelings and form genuine connections.

Kolkata-based Flutrr is addressing this challenge head-on. The app supports six Indian languages—Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, and Bengali—allowing young Indians to build relationships rooted in shared linguistic, traditional, and cultural interests.

“Small-town India, colloquially known as ‘Bharat’, boasts around 650 million youth who lack English fluency. However, the ‘Jio Effect’ has brought affordable internet access to even the remotest corners of the nation, levelling the digital playing field. Flutrr is pioneering this change by offering a dating app available in major Indian languages, enabling young individuals to connect with potential romantic partners in their native tongues,” says Kaushik Banerjee, Co-Founder and CEO of Flutrr.

Funding Momentum and Investor Backing

Flutrr recently raised ₹2 crore from actor Huma Qureshi and other angel investors, including former Global CMO of Hoechst and Merck Sandeep Bhattacharya and PayPal USA Director Yogesh Mishra.

Overall, the startup has raised approximately $750,000 (₹6.5 crore) from investors that include Times of India, The Chennai Angels, and senior executives from companies such as Google, SAP, Microsoft, and DBS.

“Huma’s investment propels us toward becoming a pan-India success story from Kolkata. We’re thrilled to welcome a strong woman like Huma to the Flutrr family,” says Kaushik.

“Huma has always taken up strong feminist roles in her career. And as a women-centric app, we couldn’t be more excited to have her on board,” adds Anirban, Co-Founder and CMO.

How Flutrr Works: Pay-Per-Use and Safety First

Available on both Android and iOS, Flutrr follows a pay-per-use monetisation model based on micro-transactions. Users do not pay for a subscription. Instead, they purchase only the premium features they want.

For example, a profile boost that places a user at the top of a curated group costs ₹79 for six hours. Likes can be bought at ₹25 for seven units, with several other paid features available.

Safety is a core focus. The app uses a face recognition algorithm and mobile number verification to reduce fake profiles. Additional safeguards include private-mode messaging, a kill switch that erases chats from the receiver’s device, a blur filter during video calls, a ban on screenshots, and a “ghost mode” that hides the user’s exact location.

New Features to Boost Engagement

Flutrr has added several features designed to make the experience more interactive. One of them, called “finderr,” lets users create short-form content that appears on their profile—functioning similarly to Instagram or TikTok.

Other engagement tools include love quotes, music, and a gifting option. “Our app is initiating a gifting culture by introducing coupons that reward users for sending more likes and messages on our platform. This incentivizes our users to engage more actively with our app,” explains Anirban.

Strong Metrics and Future Targets

The Indian online dating industry is projected to reach $69.90 million in 2024. Flutrr is well positioned within this market: 72% of its users come from Tier II and smaller towns. The app reports a match rate of 8.58%, significantly higher than the 2–3% typically seen on English-language dating apps in India’s top 30 cities.

With more than 400,000 active users and approaching one million downloads, Flutrr currently generates ₹20–21 lakh in monthly revenue. The company expects to become profitable by the end of 2024.

Looking ahead, Flutrr aims to grow to 5–6 million users over the next 12 months, achieve operational breakeven by the end of 2024, and expand its technology team through new hires.

By combining multilingual support, strong safety features, and a flexible monetisation model, Flutrr is working to make online dating more inclusive and culturally relevant for a much wider section of India’s young population.
