How Bengaluru Startup ‘Gumo’ is Building an AI Co-Pilot for Smarter Travel Planning

Planning a holiday should feel exciting, but for many travellers, it often turns into a stressful exercise of comparing endless options across tabs, reviews, and social media. Bengaluru-based startup Gumo is tackling this decision fatigue with an intelligent, context-led approach that guides users from inspiration to a complete itinerary.
Founded in 2023 by travel enthusiasts Mohammad Shakir, Manish Narang, and Kapil Sharma, Gumo positions itself as a true AI travel co-pilot. Rather than simply listing hotels or flights, the platform understands user preferences and helps them make confident decisions throughout the journey. With around 22,000 monthly active users, Gumo is quickly gaining traction as a smart companion for modern travellers.
Solving the Real Pain Point in Travel
According to the founders, modern travel has a major discovery problem. People discover destinations through Instagram reels, YouTube videos, and social media, but the actual decision-making process remains fragmented and exhausting. Reports suggest that in markets like India, Thailand, and Indonesia, over 75% of people watch travel-related livestreams, yet converting that inspiration into concrete plans is still difficult.
Gumo addresses this by capturing intent early. Users can share links from Instagram, YouTube, or online travel agencies, and Gumo’s AI co-pilot converts that information into a visual travel map and personalised bucket list. This context-first approach helps reduce the mental load of planning.
One of Gumo’s standout features is the Personalised Match Score. Instead of generic star ratings, the platform analyses multiple sources including Reddit, YouTube, and Instagram to generate unbiased insights. If a user wants a sea-facing villa with a pool for a family trip, Gumo will rate properties based on how well they match those specific requirements.
Building Stickiness in a Low-Loyalty Market
The travel industry is known for low customer loyalty. Travellers often compare prices across MakeMyTrip, Booking.com, and other platforms with almost zero switching costs. Gumo aims to change this by becoming a persistent, intelligent layer above transaction platforms.
By understanding user context whether someone wants an experiential trip, a relaxing getaway, or a spiritual journey Gumo builds a personal travel profile that improves with every interaction. This creates genuine stickiness through better recommendations and smoother planning.
The platform is available on both the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. Users appreciate the conversational interface that feels more like talking to a knowledgeable friend than using a traditional booking engine.
Impressive Early Growth and Traction
Gumo has scaled rapidly. The startup grew from 5,000 monthly active users in January 2026 to 22,000 by March, a fourfold increase in under 90 days. It has crossed over 50,000 downloads on Android and 10,000 on iOS, with strong engagement and repeat usage. Retention rates are reportedly more than twice the typical travel app benchmark.
The user base is global, with around 10% coming from international markets like the US, UK, and UAE. This early international traction shows the universal appeal of reducing travel planning friction.
Strategic Focus on Decision Layer
While giants like MakeMyTrip focus on optimising transactions and monetising bookings, Gumo is deliberately owning the “decision layer,” helping users figure out where to go and what to book before the actual transaction happens.
This strategic positioning allows the startup to build deeper user relationships and create value that goes beyond price comparison. The founders believe the future of travel tech lies in autonomous execution, where AI handles more of the journey from research and booking to post-trip support.
Funding, Team, and Future Plans
Gumo started with an initial investment of ₹25 lakh and recently raised $100,000 in an angel round from boAt co-founder Sameer Mehta and Fractional CHRO Martin Gomez.
The 12-member team is focused on product-led growth, UGC-driven acquisition, and expanding into high-intent markets. The company is strengthening hotel research and booking flows while doubling down on social-led distribution.
Looking ahead, Gumo aims to reach one lakh active users by combining intelligent planning with seamless execution. The founders see a massive opportunity in India’s growing leisure and weekend travel segment, as well as the global shift toward more frequent, shorter trips.
Why Gumo Stands Out
In a crowded travel tech space, Gumo differentiates itself through its context-based, conversational approach rather than a traditional search-led model. By focusing on reducing decision fatigue and building a personal travel context graph, the startup is creating a more human and helpful planning experience.
As AI continues to transform how we travel, platforms like Gumo that combine intelligence with genuine understanding of user needs are well-positioned for long-term success.
From inspiration to itinerary, Gumo is making travel planning feel exciting again one smart conversation at a time.
