PhonePe Invest: How Share.market Became PhonePe’s Next Big Bet on India’s Investment Market

Introduced as share.market in August 2023, the stockbroking platform was originally intended for active investors and traders. On October 19, 2026, PhonePe rebranded it as PhonePe Invest. With this app, it intends to bring millions of everyday savers into the stock market through simpler investment tools, portfolio analysis and AI-led assistance.
PhonePe’s strategy has transitioned from helping users carry out trades to guiding them in understanding, developing, and managing their investments.
The company now wants to connect its large payments and savings user base with India’s growing wealth-tech market.
How PhonePe Entered the Stock Market With Share.Market
PhonePe’s investment journey began well before the PhonePe Invest name appeared. PhonePe Wealth Broking Private Limited was incorporated in April 2021, laying the groundwork for the company’s entry into stockbroking and wealth management.
On August 30, 2023, PhonePe launched share.market as a dedicated stockbroking platform available through a mobile app and website. The initial offering included stocks, intraday trading, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), mutual funds and curated investment portfolios called WealthBaskets.
The idea was to combine discount broking with market research and technology. Instead of simply giving users a place to buy and sell shares, share.market aimed to provide research-backed insights to help them make investment decisions.
PhonePe also had a potential distribution advantage. Its established payments platform gave it access to a large base of users already familiar with digital financial services. The company believed this reach, combined with simplified onboarding and competitive pricing, could help it attract investors who wanted a more convenient way to participate in the stock market.
However, the initial focus was largely on people who already understood investing or actively traded in financial markets. That left a much larger audience of savers who used PhonePe for everyday payments, mutual funds or digital gold but had not moved into direct equity investing.

How share.market Grew Before the PhonePe Invest Rebranding
share.market expanded its offering beyond its initial stock and ETF products.
In April 2024, the platform introduced futures and options (F&O) trading, adding option-chain analysis and tools aimed at active traders. PhonePe reported that, within seven months of launch, share.market had crossed 1.55 million lifetime customers and had 150,000 demat accounts. It also reported more than 75,000 daily users engaging with its market-intelligence features.
These figures show that the platform had begun building a user base relatively quickly. However, they represent the business’s position in early 2024 and should not be treated as its current customer count.
PhonePe’s subsequent disclosures also indicated that its wider investment business had gained traction. In its updated draft prospectus, the company reported that, as of September 30, 2025, share.market had opened 1.26 million demat accounts. Its mutual fund distribution business had ₹58.38 billion in assets under management and was processing 2.33 million systematic investment plan transactions every month.
The numbers highlight an important distinction: PhonePe’s investment business was not starting from zero in October 2026. It had already spent several years developing products, acquiring users and building its research capabilities.
The next challenge was to make those capabilities relevant to a much broader audience.

Why Did PhonePe Rebrand share.market as PhonePe Invest?
The rebranding reflects a change in the audience PhonePe wants to serve.
According to PhonePe Founder and Chief Product and Technology Officer Rahul Chari, share.market was originally designed for active investors and traders, a relatively small segment of the company’s wider customer base. PhonePe Invest is intended to reach people who already save through mutual funds, fixed deposits and gold but have yet to become direct equity investors.
This is where PhonePe sees a significant opportunity.
The company has built familiarity with small-ticket financial products, including daily mutual fund SIPs starting at ₹10 and lump-sum mutual fund investments starting at ₹100, according to Chari’s October 2026 comments. It now wants to help some of those users take the next step into equity investing.
The strategy is to make investing less intimidating by helping users understand what they own, how their portfolio is performing and what changes they might consider.
The PhonePe name also brings the investing platform closer to the company’s broader financial services ecosystem, which includes payments, lending, insurance and savings products.
In other words, PhonePe wants to move beyond being a platform where users complete financial transactions. It wants to become a place where they can manage more of their financial lives.
PhonePe Invest’s Biggest New Feature: Portfolio Optimiser
Launched alongside the October 2026 rebranding, Portfolio Optimiser is central to PhonePe’s new strategy.
The tool is designed to help users build, review and optimise investment portfolios through a unified experience.
Build: Help first-time investors get started
The portfolio builder is intended to guide users through investment allocation based on strategies and risk profiles. It can help users explore combinations of stocks, mutual funds and ETFs without having to research every available option independently.
Review: Understand what is already in the portfolio
The analysis feature provides insights into asset allocation, diversification, portfolio concentration and individual holdings. PhonePe says its research-backed ratings can help investors decide which investments to hold, monitor or consider selling.
Optimise: Identify possible improvements
The optimisation feature identifies potential weaknesses, including underperforming assets and excessive exposure to particular sectors. Users can then explore suggested portfolio changes through a simplified rebalancing process.
The feature is also intended to help experienced investors review holdings across demat accounts, making it useful beyond first-time investors.
However, portfolio ratings and suggested changes are not guarantees of future performance. Investors still need to assess the risks, costs and suitability of any proposed changes.
What Are PhonePe Invest’s Future Plans?
PhonePe’s stated ambition extends beyond rebranding its stockbroking platform. Its October 2026 strategy points towards a broader wealth-tech offering built around first-time investors, portfolio management and AI-powered assistance.
1. Bring more everyday savers into equity markets
PhonePe wants to reach users who already save through gold and mutual funds but have not invested directly in stocks. The company sees this transition as a major opportunity over the next five years, while continuing to serve active investors and traders.
It has not announced a specific customer-acquisition target for PhonePe Invest.
2. Integrate investing more closely with the PhonePe app
The dedicated PhonePe Invest app will continue to serve active investors, while simplified entry points and guided investment journeys are planned for the main PhonePe app.
This could make it easier for existing PhonePe users to discover investment products without having to navigate an unfamiliar investing experience from the beginning.
3. Expand AI-powered portfolio assistance
PhonePe is exploring ways to use AI to make investment information easier to understand. Potential developments discussed by Rahul Chari include voice-enabled onboarding, multilingual summaries of market news relevant to a user’s holdings and watchlists, and a chatbot that can answer questions about an investor’s portfolio.
The company has also discussed enabling users to take their portfolio information into external AI interfaces through supported integrations.
These are exploratory or planned capabilities, not all confirmed as generally available features. Their value will depend on the quality of the insights, data security and how clearly the platform communicates investment risks.
4. Make research available to a much larger audience
PhonePe is also looking to scale research and portfolio analysis through technology rather than relying entirely on manual guidance. Its goal is to make investment insights accessible to a broader population, including people outside major metropolitan areas.
This approach could help the company reach customers who cannot easily access professional investment guidance. However, automated insights must remain understandable, transparent and appropriately risk-aware if they are to earn users’ trust.

Can PhonePe Invest Compete With Groww and Zerodha?
PhonePe Invest enters a market where users already have established alternatives, including Groww and Zerodha. Its distribution reach is an advantage, but reach alone will not guarantee success.
Its opportunity lies in serving people who may be comfortable with digital payments and small-ticket savings but find stock-market investing confusing. Portfolio guidance, simpler explanations and integrated financial journeys could help PhonePe differentiate its offering.
At the same time, experienced traders may prioritise order execution, advanced trading tools, platform stability and responsive customer support. PhonePe will need to meet those expectations while building trust among first-time investors.
Its AI-led strategy also creates responsibilities. Portfolio recommendations must be clearly explained, customer data must be protected, and users must understand that research signals do not guarantee returns.
The competition will therefore be decided not just by how easily users can open accounts, but by whether PhonePe Invest helps them make better-informed decisions over time.
