The Carpet Affair: Reimagining Interior Spaces

In the world of interior designing, ranging from maximalism to minimalism and carefully crafting a space that is an expression of yourself, each item plays a pivotal role. There is no right or wrong choice, just the approach that suits your liking. Complimenting the interior with the style of architecture, be it classical, gothic, modernist, or brutalist, can be an engaging task.

In such cases, carpets don’t just serve as spatial coverings but also imbue the place with personality. The Carpet Affair is trying to make carpets and rugs with bold designs come to life. The process is simple.

Whether a brief spark of inspiration or a fully developed concept, their in-house design studio sits and crafts a design suited to your needs. Once the design is completed and the green signal is confirmed, they meticulously choose high-quality materials, ensuring maximum flexibility in design, colour, and pattern.

The carpet is then crafted with care and precision, and a dedicated team, with on-site expertise, assists in the installation. This process is easier said than done, but their team ensures that they try to make this process as smooth as possible.

Vision and Journey of the Founder

The Carpet Affair revolves around a concept called structural chaos – systems or models where small changes in the structure can lead to drastically different outcomes. According to its founder Shivam Arora, most luxury rugs are beautiful, but they feel flat and static. He envisioned making a change to how a rug actually feels and its interaction with a space, talking about creating literal 3D landscapes for the floor by intentionally clashing textures.

For example, he envisioned the raw, grounded, organic feel of pure New Zealand wool wedded against the fluid, liquid sheen of Tencel silk. Due to their in-house production, they can play with complex yarn blends that other brands typically avoid.

Asked to define the brand in one line, one could say it is high fashion, contemporary design woven with ancestral craftsmanship.

Charting their official journey, the beginnings were incredibly humbling. Before we recreate their journey, let us shine a light on Shivam Arora’s journey. He went to the prestigious Scindia boarding school. He went to pursue his undergraduate studies at NMIMS Mumbai, followed by an MBA at SIBM Pune.

His family has a deep, strong background in carpet yarn manufacturing and traditional carpets. So, on paper, the corporate business blueprint was all set, but Shivam wanted to deviate from the traditional path placed before him.

Building a Modern Carpet Brand

He wanted to build a modern, high-end bespoke brand on his own terms. So, he walked away from the safety net of a family business, taking up regular jobs at other carpet companies. During this process, he learned the ground reality and started this brand with zero family funding or external capital.

Every mistake, every victory, every up and down would be a result of his own actions rather than something that was handed down to him. As a brand, trying to do something different, the initial months were really humbling.

Before officially launching, Shivam spent six months simply brainstorming, running trial tests, and dealing with a massive string of failed samples.

Trying to explain the concept of highly complex, modern 3D design to master artisans who have spent generations weaving flat, traditional patterns is a massive barrier in itself. They initially wasted a lot of yarn, hit cul-de-sacs, and eventually built mutual trust one step at a time.

Operating their own factory warehouse means they absorb creative risks directly, but those six months of failure taught them how to execute later on. And some journeys are definitely worth the trouble.

Beautiful Moments and Advice for Founders

Shivam recalled a story of an architect who came to them with a massive challenge – a custom, 20-foot wall-mounted carpet with an incredibly complex design. The architect had received rejections from everywhere, with multiple vendors deeming it ‘impossible’. To achieve, especially in hand tufting.

They took it on. Their artists spent weeks meticulously bringing that difficult design to life, capturing every single detail. But the real hurdle was faced during installation. Transporting and mounting a 20-foot textile masterpiece on a wall is a logistical nightmare. Their team went down to the site, engineered the framing on-the-spot, and successfully installed it.

The smile on the architect’s face when he saw a design everyone called 'impossible' perfectly mounted on that wall was a beautiful moment.

When asked about his biggest takeaways as a founder, he mentioned that one should learn how to embrace the mess. Just like in his designs, innovations in this business don’t happen without a little bit of chaos. The market will constantly push you towards cheap, safe, and easily replicable, but Shivam urges them not to dilute their vision. For young entrepreneurs, he advises young entrepreneurs to find their specific, unfiltered voice and protect it at all costs.

Building a luxury product takes time. It’s a process that cannot be rushed, and the Carpet Affair hammers home this point. In a world where everything is an extension of our personality, such crafted rugs help us liven our homes.
