On July 16, 2026, Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace achieved what once seemed like a distant dream: the successful launch of Vikram-1, India’s first privately developed orbital rocket. Lifting off flawlessly from the historic First Launch Pad at SDSC-SHAR, Sriharikota, under Mission Aagaman, the rocket reached space and injected its payloads into a precise 450 km orbit.

This wasn’t just another launch. It was a defining moment that placed India among an elite group only the third country in the world (after the US and China) with proven private orbital launch capability.

The company is named after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the father of the Indian space programme, and its rockets honour his legacy. Vikram-1 is the first in a family of rockets designed to deliver small satellites (up to 480 kg to Low Earth Orbit) at a fraction of traditional costs.

Skyroot has combined cutting-edge technologies like 3D-printed engines, carbon-fibre composites, and indigenous propulsion systems with agile private-sector execution. Backed by investors including Singapore’s GIC and Temasek, and strong support from ISRO, the company has moved rapidly from concept to orbital success.
