The Question That Cleaned Up an Industry: The Story of Kent

By Thanushree

Kent
Kent

It started with a family's health concerns.

Nothing about it looked like the beginning of a business. It was an everyday worry, the kind many households quietly live with: is the water we drink safe? But that worry sparked an idea, and the idea would go on to change India's water-purification market.

Meet the Man Behind KENT

Mahesh Gupta is the founder of Kent RO Systems Ltd.

He is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. In 1999, he started KENT after recognising how important access to clean drinking water really is.

A Problem Too Important to Ignore

Clean water isn't a luxury or a trend. It is a critical, everyday need, and Mahesh saw that clearly.

So he didn't set out to build an empire. He set out to address a problem.

What began as an effort to solve that problem grew, step by step, into one of India's well-known water-purifier brands.

One Simple Question

His journey is a reminder that some of the biggest businesses begin with a simple question:

"How can I solve a problem that matters to millions of people?"

It's a question that doesn't demand a breakthrough invention. You don't always need to create something entirely new. Sometimes, you just need to solve an existing problem better.

The Numbers Today

In FY26, KENT's revenue stood at Rs. 1400 Crore.

From a family's health concerns to a business of that scale, the thread running through the story is the same: a real problem, and a solution people could trust.

The Lesson for Founders

Great businesses are built by identifying real problems and creating solutions people can trust.
