Two Childhood Friends Built a ₹110 Crore AI Study App at Just 21

In the competitive world of AI startups, success stories often begin with grand ambitions of building unicorns. But for Rudy Arora and Sarthak Dhawan, childhood friends from the suburbs of Dallas, the journey behind their AI-powered study app Turbo AI (formerly Turbolearn) started with a much simpler goal: creating something useful and earning enough to cover college expenses. By age 21, they had built a business generating more than ₹110 Crore in lifetime revenue.

The duo met in middle school and bonded over shared interests. Their entrepreneurial spark first appeared in high school through side projects like a marketplace for Christmas light installers and a grade-checking app. Though those ventures didn’t last, they taught the friends valuable lessons in product development and customer feedback.

The Spark: Solving Their Own College Struggle

The idea for Turbo AI emerged in January 2024 during their freshman year. Arora was at Northwestern University and Dhawan at Duke. Both struggled with a common student problem: listening attentively to lectures while taking effective notes.

“We knew AI was good at turning dense text into more digestible formats,” Arora told Business Insider. “So we decided to make a product that combines all of this into a single workflow. Users can either record their lecture or add something they want to study, and we’ll use AI to turn it into notes, flashcards, and quiz questions.”

What began as a practical solution for themselves quickly gained traction. By March 2025, the app was generating nearly $500,000 in monthly revenue. The founders completed their sophomore year and then decided to go full-time with the business.

Organic Growth Through TikTok

Early growth came from grassroots efforts approaching students on campus. But real acceleration happened on TikTok. Arora started posting videos about the app multiple times a day. When one video went viral, he doubled down on content creation. The strategy worked brilliantly, and the team later expanded by partnering with more creators.

The product’s value proposition is simple yet powerful: students upload lecture recordings or study material, and Turbo AI instantly generates comprehensive study aids. This efficiency has resonated strongly with time-strapped college students.

Mindset Shift and Team Building

Dhawan highlighted how AI tools have transformed their own development process. “My favourite model to use now is Claude Code,” he noted, explaining that much of his work now involves high-level planning and reviewing AI-generated code rather than writing everything manually.

Today, Turbo AI operates with a lean but capable team of 10 full-time employees, including six engineers. The founders emphasize sustainable growth and caution against premature decisions.

“We went full-time at the end of our sophomore year,” Arora said. “It wasn’t a hard decision. Looking back, I think we dropped out a little late. Still, I would caution against dropping out without any real payoff. I see way too many people dropping out with only an idea or at a very early stage.”

A Purpose-Driven Entrepreneurship

Arora and Dhawan’s story stands out because their original motivation wasn’t fame or massive valuations it was solving a genuine problem they faced and creating financial independence for their education. Their success proves that starting with authentic user needs, combined with smart execution and content-led marketing, can lead to remarkable outcomes even at a young age.

As Turbo AI continues to grow, the founders remain focused on enhancing features and expanding reach. Their journey offers inspiration to countless students and young entrepreneurs: sometimes the best businesses emerge not from chasing billions, but from addressing everyday frustrations with creativity and persistence.

In an era where AI is transforming education, Turbo AI represents both innovation and relatability built by students, for students. The two friends who once struggled with lecture notes have now built a tool that’s helping thousands study smarter.

Lessons for Young Founders

Arora and Dhawan’s journey offers several powerful takeaways:

As Turbo AI continues to scale, the founders remain committed to enhancing features and expanding their impact on student learning. Their story proves that starting with authenticity, maintaining focus, and learning from early experiments can lead to outsized success—even before reaching legal drinking age in many countries.

In an era where AI is transforming education, Turbo AI stands out as a relatable, student-first solution built by those who truly understand the challenges. For millions of learners worldwide, these two friends from the Dallas suburbs may have just made studying significantly smarter.
