By April, Bangladesh will have imported another 45,000 tonnes of diesel, as India shifts to harden its own fuel supply, amidst the rising energy demands, a senior Bangladesh official confirmed on Sunday.

Md. Murshed Hossain Azad, General Manager (Commercial and Operations) of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) indicated that a 5,000 tonnes shipment of diesel had already been received in India and another 5,000 tonnes shipment was on its way to Bangladesh between March 18 and 19. Recently, 5,000 tons of diesel have been received in Bangladesh by India, another 5,000 will be received in the 18 th or 19 th of March, Azad informed reporters over the phone. This is under a wider bilateral energy cooperation scheme between the two countries which include the fuel imports. The relocation will relieve the domestic fuel stocks in Bangladesh and guarantee continuous supply of most of the major sectors such as transportation, agriculture, and industry. Over the last few years, Bangladesh has become a heavy importer of fuel to India, which they use to fulfill their growing domestic energy demands. The BPC that controls the importation and distribution of the petroleum products in the country has been handling incremental schedules of importations to maintain uniform supply within the country.

The authorities are yet to reveal how the deal will be priced, but the agreement is indicative of the increasing economic relationships between Dhaka and New Delhi. More deliveries will occur in the next few weeks to deliver the entire 45,000 tonne delivery before the April deadline.
